Butterfly Money Box

What you need

  • Empty postal tube (small size)
  • 1 sheet of each coloured paper – blue, black and yellow
  • 1 packet of Sellotape™ gift tape
  • 1 roll Sellotape™ double-sided tape
  • 1 roll Sellotape™ sticky tape
  • 1 sheet of white cardboard
  • Craft glue
  • Pencil
  • Pilot permanent marker (black)
  • Scissors
  • 2 Black pipe cleaners

What to do

  • Ask an adult to cut the Australia Post tube in half (22cm)
  • Cut a piece of blue paper to fit around the outside of the postal tube with a little bit left over to overlap.
  • Put strips of Sellotape™ double-sided tape around the postal tube and carefully attach the paper. Use the Sellotape™ double-sided tape to adhere where the paper overlaps.
  • Use the Sellotape™ gift tape to decorate around the tube with different coloured stripes.
  • Trace a wing pattern on to cardboard and cut out two wings for the butterfly.
  • Glue blue paper on to both sides of the wings, trim around the edges and decorate with the Sellotape™ gift tape.
  • Attach the wings to the sides of the tube using sticky tape – it should look like a butterfly!
  • For the eyes, cut out two circles of cardboard about the size of a 20¢ piece and glue black paper on to both sides. Cut out two small yellow circles and glue them on one side of each black circle. Draw on small black circles for the pupils.
  • Attach the eyes to the butterfly with the Sellotape™ double-sided tape.
  • Cut two little slits in the top sides of the butterfly using the point of the scissors (you may need an adult to help with this). Push the pipe cleaners in to the holes, bend over the ends on the inside and cover with sticky tape to hold in place. Curl the other end to look like antennae.
  • If you want your butterfly to be a moneybox you need to cut a slit in the plastic lid, otherwise you can use as any kind of container.
